Benefits of Bodywork

Supporting the body’s natural ability to heal;

physically, emotionally, and neurologically.

Bodywork offers a wide range of benefits that extend beyond muscles and joints. While many people seek massage for physical relief, research shows that bodywork also plays an important role in supporting emotional regulation, nervous system health, and overall well-being.

Healthy, intentional touch has been shown to reduce stress, support immune function, and improve quality of life especially for those living with chronic pain, trauma, or prolonged stress. Below are some of the key ways bodywork can support the body and mind.

What Research Shows

Scientific studies over the last several decades have shown that massage and bodywork can:

  • Decrease blood pressure

  • Reduce the stress hormone cortisol

  • Increase serotonin and oxytocin (hormones associated with mood and connection)

  • Decrease Substance P (a neurotransmitter associated with pain perception)

  • Support immune system function

  • Reduce inflammation and edema

  • Improve circulation

Cortisol

Cortisol plays an essential role in the body’s stress response. In short bursts, it helps the body respond to challenges by redirecting energy where it’s needed most. However, when stress becomes chronic, cortisol levels can remain elevated for long periods of time.

Prolonged stress can interfere with sleep, digestion, immune function, and overall healing. Bodywork has been shown to help regulate cortisol levels, supporting the body’s ability to return to a more balanced state.

Oxytocin

Oxytocin is often referred to as the “bonding” or “connection” hormone. It plays an important role in feelings of trust, safety, and emotional regulation.

Intentional, trauma-informed touch can help stimulate oxytocin release, supporting a sense of safety in the body - an essential component of healing, particularly for those who have experienced trauma or chronic stress.

Serotonin

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter closely tied to mood regulation, sleep, appetite, and emotional well-being. In the digestive system, it also plays a role in regulating motility.

By encouraging relaxation and nervous system regulation, bodywork can support healthy serotonin levels - helping clients feel more grounded, calm, and emotionally resilient.

Substance P

Substance P is a neuropeptide involved in transmitting pain signals to the brain and contributing to inflammatory responses in the body.

Elevated levels of Substance P have been associated with chronic pain conditions, including fibromyalgia. Research suggests that bodywork may help reduce levels of Substance P, potentially decreasing pain sensitivity and supporting long-term relief.
